April 21, 2012 | By | 3 Comments
This post is part of the “things that you can do” list during two weeks travel in Tokyo. In the previous post, Akihabara Electric Town (day 1) was suggested as the first thing to do in Tokyo for a truly geeky experience. In the second day, temples, river cruise and panoramic view from an observatory will be the main attractions for this Day-2 post. Things that you can do during your second day in Tokyo will be divided in 3 articles. Part 1 (this post) talks about Asakusa Senso-ji Temple, then part 2 presents  the Sumida River Cruise and finally part 3 talks about the Zojoji Temple and Tokyo Tower.

Asakusa Senso-ji Temple is one the main tourist attraction in Tokyo. any traveler to Tokyo should not miss this temple. The entrance gate (The Thunder Gate) has a big red paper lantern with japanese  character on it. Once you enter the gate, small shops with local traditional Foods or souvenirs surround the entrance of the temple (similar to european traditional christmas market), with some cherry trees and artificial cherry blossom flower on top of each shop given it a nice global view. Then, you will reach a second gate to the Asakusa Senso-ji Temple. Once you enter it you will see behind you a giant Straw sandal. On your right you will  notice the famous Sky Tree building. There is also a smoke coming from a place in front of the temple, they say it gives you good luck. Visitors go inside the temple (Senso-ji Main Hall)  to pray. On the left there is a nice garden (Denbo-in Garden) where you can take some nice photos with the cherry blossom (in April), bridge, small river, waterfall and the Senso-ji temple all together, the perfect spot for a traditional japanese photo. Very beautiful !!

Once you finish visiting the Asakusa Senso-Ji temple, there is a covered walking avenue crossing the main entrance of the temple with a lot of small shops selling traditional japanese goods and also some japanese cuisine restaurants. you can have a walk there and have lunch. There is also some american fast food in front of the Sumida River cruise departure. More photos of the Asakusa Senso-Ji temple taken with a Sony Nex-5 camera and a 18-200mm lens (sel18200) are available below.

In the next post, I will talk about the Sumida River cruise.
